In an hypothetical situation like that described in the preceding page, any form of and assistance would hardly be possible: most hospitals and sanitary facilities would have been destroyed, a great part of professionally prepared people, i.e. physicians, paramedics, policemen, firemen, civil defense officials, etc., would have perished. Roads would be obstructed by debris or wiped out from the face of the earth making relief or evacuation impossible.

The table above, prepared by the Japanese Government () and by the ONU () shows the population loss at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, hit respectively by a 13.5 kilotons and a 20 kilotons nuclear bomb. The official balance of the victims of Hiroshima as at 6 August, 1987, is of 148,167 deaths, keeping into account the victims who died immediately after the nuclear bombing and those who died within the above specified date following resulting damages.

The table below obtained from data published by The Office of Technological Assessment (OTA) shows the possible number of fatalities in the city of Detroit and adjacent areas should a 1 megaton nuclear bomb be detonated on the ground in Detroit.
