WHAT TO DO IF AN APPLICATION DOESN'T RECOGNIZE A PRINTER

If you have several non-Microsoft applications on your Windows 98 computer, you may eventually experience a problem where an application doesn't recognize a printer you have set up in Windows that you have named with the inclusion of square brackets (for example: TechDept[Color]Printer).

This is because some third-party applications are unable to interpret the square brackets and, therefore, don't designate the printer as an available option. To resolve this problem:

1. Click Start | Printers to open the Printers folder.

2. Right-click the printer in question and select the Rename option from the context menu.

3. Type a new name for the printer without square brackets. Press Enter.

You must restart your computer so that the new names are written to both the registry and the Win.ini file. Applications may read the printer names from either of these locations, so a reboot is required for Windows to check each location.
