SAVE DOCUMENT SCRAPS TO YOUR DESKTOP

The desktop is Windows' gathering spot for frequently used icons, such as the Recycle Bin. However, it's also a place you can store items you need to see at a glance.

If you spend a lot of time reading, reviewing, and dissecting Word documents, there's a simple way to keep a copy of snippets of these documents on the Windows desktop for later use. This allows you to use your desktop as a big bulletin board for ideas and boilerplate text. Here's how:

  1. Open your Word document and locate the text to "snip."
  2. Highlight the text and use the Restore command from Word's control menu to allow you to see the Windows desktop behind the Word window.
  3. Drag the text to the desktop and release it.
  4. Double-click the new icon on the desktop named Document Scrap. This will open a new Word window containing that scrap of text.
