ENABLE REMOTE ADMINISTRATION ACCESS

The most commonly used security method of sharing folders and printers on Windows 9x computers is share-level access. It's the default method and only requires a password (if at all). But some remote administration tasks require the computer to have the alternative security method: user-level access.

In order to take advantage of the user-level access method of securing a Win9x computer, either a Novell NetWare computer or a Windows NT-based computer must be present on the network. The NT-based computer can even be an NT Workstation or a Windows 2000 Professional PC. This computer holds the list of accounts that will have access to the Windows 9x PCs.

To change a computer's access from share-level to user-level, follow these steps:

1. In Control Panel, double-click the Network applet.
2. Select the Access Control tab.
3. Choose User-Level Access Control, and click OK.

You must also make sure that remote administration access is set up.
Follow these steps:

1. Ensure that the computer holding the accounts is available to the Win9x computers on the network.

2. Make sure you have the client for Microsoft Networks or NetWare Networks installed, depending on the type of computer you selected.

3. Log on to the network, and verify that you have File And Printer Sharing for Microsoft or NetWare networks enabled (as appropriate).

4. From the Access Control tab of the Network applet in Control Panel, select User-Level Access Control, and type the name of the computer with the accounts.

5. Click OK, install any required files, and restart the computer.

6. In the Passwords applet of Control Panel, select the Remote Administration tab.

7. Select the Enable Remote Administration Of This Server check box.

8. Click Add, and the list of accounts from the computer you specified earlier will appear.

9. Select the accounts to which you want to grant remote administration access, and click OK.
