CHANGING THE DRIVE LETTER OF A CD-ROM
DRIVE
The vast majority
of Windows 9x computers probably have a single hard disk configured as "C"
and a CD-ROM drive configured as "D." "A" is almost universally the first
floppy drive. However, if you upgrade a Windows 9x computer by installing
a second hard drive, you may want the second hard drive to become "D" and
the CD drive shuffled down the list to "E" to keep your hard drive letters
in a contiguous order. Before installing the second hard drive, follow
these steps to change the drive letter of your CD-ROM (the steps are
identical for Windows 95 and 98):
Click Start |
Settings | Control Panel.
Double-click the
System applet.
Select the CD
drive that you wish to modify from the Device Manager tab and then select
Properties.
Look for the
Reserved Drive Letters section on the Settings tab.
Set both the Start
Drive Letter and End Drive Letter to the desired drive letter (e.g., "E").
OK your changes.
Restart your computer,
install your new hard drive, and check the drive
letters.
