Magnets attract ferrous elements, but not
only, they attract people; most of us undergo the captivating
attraction of a magnet, that mysterious force, magnetism,
that is the glue of the universe and still baffles science.
As it happens, if you find yourself in possession of some
neodymium magnets it is very likely that you will start to
play with them and exert your imagination as to how to employ
them. That is what happened to me and, having all sort of
ferrous materials in my junkyard I ventured to set up some
magnetic pyramids. Pyramids too are mysterious and
attractive, a perfect combination! Pyramids are to be found
in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas but all that we know
about them is that we do not know the real purpose behind
their construction; each pyramidologist has his say in this
matter.
Concerning the pictures above, I will label
them from left to right 'a' 'b' 'c' the three on top and 'd'
'e' 'f' the three on the bottom and give some explanation
concerning their set up. Keep in mind that they are set up
with makeshift materials so as it happened to be at hand and
therefore the geometric parameters proper of a pyramid, that
is the relation between apothem 1
and any of its sides is not respected. Hence the following
specifications are just a guideline, you can build your pyramid
according to your requirements, with suitable materials and
scaled to the right geometrical ratios.
a - The 5 neodymium spheres have a diameter
of 18 mm; 4 ferrite rods 185 x 10 mm and 4 iron rods 220 x
10 mm - the base - are here employed. Since a pyramid standing
on spherical magnets is easily offset some kind of bracing
is suggested; two bakelite braces can be seen in picture 'e'.
b - The circular base - iron - has an external
diameter of 171 mm and an internal diameter of 152 mm, the
5 neodymium spheres have a diameter of 18 mm and the 4 ferrite
rods measure 185 x 10 mm.
c - The image is reproduced (as a negative)
from the book Experiments in Four Dimensions by David L. Heiserman,
Tab Books, 1983. From the same book the computer program "Experiments
in Four Dimensions" written in Microsoft Basic, is here
made available in a zip file; it will
run in a DOS environment; the program
listing is also included.
d - A not-really 4D pyramid suggested by
the previous image. The external pyramid is the same as that
in figure b; the inner pyramid is displaced 90° relative
to the external one; the smaller spherical neodymium magnets
at the base have a diameter of 10 mm; the rods forming the
internal pyramid are 127 x 4 mm, obtained from welding electrodes
and the small neodymium magnet on top is 5 x5 mm. More
e - The pyramid is set on a iron chassis
recovered from an old computer; the perpendicular distance
to the truncated apex is 226 mm, the diagonal braces 340 mm
inclined at 55° and the base sides are 300 mm each. 24
x 0.1 microfarad, 400 volt D.C. capacitors connected in parallel
(therefore, 2.4 mF) are set, regularly spaced, around the
pyramid, whose braces are electrically insulated from the
metallic chassis by mica washers. It is extremely sensitive
to ambient open line electricity
(if an appliance or an incandescent lamp is turned on readings
will drop and turning on an unshielded 1.5 KW Variac transformer
under the lab's table will instantly bring the meter to zero)
and bioelectricity as shown by readings with a digital millivolt
meter set on AC (smaller readings will be displayed also on
DC), one wire attached to the open end of the capacitors and
the other to the pyramid's frame; readings can vary from a
few millivolt (mV) to well in excess of 300 mV, depending
on its distance from the electrical lines and current flow,
2 but
it will never stabilize on a fixed value and the oscilloscope
pattern is erratic since the chassis in not grounded; circling
one brace of the pyramid with joined thumb and index fingers
around it, or placing the palm of an hand about 5 cm away
from the brace will zero the meter, 1/3 of a volt vanishes.
Is the charge neutralized or absorbed by the bio-entity? Perhaps
Kirlian photography would give a satisfactory answer. Electronic
circuitry for experimentation is not yet designed but a fuzzy
project is already taking shape.
f- Two iron tubes on each side, respectively
134 x 15 mm are joined by a ring neodymium magnet, external
diameter 25 mm, internal diameter 15 mm and thickness 5 mm;
they rest on 4 neodymium spherical magnets 18 mm in diameter
and a ring magnet (same dimensions as above) "glues"
them at the top. What is interesting here is the interaction
of the magnetic field, clearly visible in the picture from
the slant position of the electrodes, repelled from the magnetic
field of the pyramidal frame. A compass placed on the base
under the apex will be displaced
90° from the magnetic north.
Concerning the properties of a magnetic pyramid
- a novel construct - and any possible application of the
same, only applied experimentation can give some delineated
results; someone might like to probe deeper into this matter.
As a metallic open frame it lends itself easily to electronic
circuitry applications (see picture 'e'). A daydreaming
project, published on this site several years ago is the cavity
resonator ~
1
- The best passive torsion generators are formed
by cones or pyramidal shapes built according to the “phi”
ratio of 1 to 0.618034... (the Fibonacci series, or Golden
Ratio) and it can, therefore, be said the pyramid shape has
the power to harness torsional energy because torsion waves
are phi-spirals and for this reason a pyramid will hold positive
energy and deflects negative energy wavelengths. The geometrical
ratios used in the Egyptian pyramids are depicted in this
plate.
2 -
Electrical supply is rationed in Asmara, when the town is
cut of from it readings will be in the order of a few millivolts
AC, somewhat more consistent on DC. But swing an arm fast
on the structure and the dynamo gets going; did something
similar set Nikola Tesla on
the right track? No doubt he toiled with magnets and coils!
