An unrealized Italian project of the colonial era was to build a channel from Mersa Fatma across Colulli to flood the Plain of Assale. The waters of the Red Sea would have created a "Mare Dancalo" covering a surface of 4750 square kilometers and reaching the feet of the Ethiopian highlands to only 60 kilometers from the city of Makalle. |
